Student Pilot Documents & Requirements
Everything you need to begin and stay on track with your flight training.
Whether you’re just starting your journey toward becoming a pilot or preparing for your solo, having the correct documents and certifications is essential. This page outlines exactly what you need, with links and tips to make the process smooth and simple.
📅 BEFORE YOUR FIRST LESSON
To begin flight training, you should bring:
- A valid government-issued photo ID (Driver’s license, passport, etc.)
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship:
- U.S. Passport OR
- Original birth certificate AND government-issued photo ID
- Completed Aces High Aviation Student Form (available at the front desk)

✈️ REQUIRED DURING TRAINING
As you progress, you’ll need the following official documents:
- FAA Student Pilot Certificate
Apply through IACRA. Your instructor will guide you through this process in one of your lessons. - FAA Medical Certificate (3rd Class or higher)
Schedule with an FAA-approved Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Most students use Dr. Hertzog in Long Beach: 2925 Palo Verde Ave, Long Beach, CA 90815 — (562) 799-2020. You can find the page dedicated to that information here - Logbook
Required to record all flight and ground training. Available for purchase in the front office.
🔒 SECURITY ACCESS (AOA Badge)
If you’d like to preflight solo or walk out to the aircraft before your instructor arrives, you’ll need a Long Beach Airport AOA Security Badge:
- Application and fingerprinting process through the airport
- In-person security briefing
