South Bay
Flight School

Torrance, Redondo, Manhattan, Hermosa, El Segundo, Hawthorne.
15 to 25 minutes to KLGB. Skip the LAX complexity.

The South Bay is sandwiched between LAX to the north and the Palos Verdes Peninsula to the south. LAX has zero general aviation access. Hawthorne Municipal (KHHR) is small and restricted. Zamperini Field in Torrance (TOA) has limited fleet options. Long Beach Airport sits just east of the South Bay, 15 to 25 minutes via the 405 or PCH, and it gives you everything a serious flight school needs: a towered Class D environment, 13 training aircraft, 15+ instructors, and 300+ VFR days per year. South Bay residents from every beach city train here.

Why South Bay Pilots Choose KLGB

Every South Bay City, Under 25 Min405 east or PCH east to Lakewood Blvd
From Torrance, the drive is about 15 minutes via PCH or the 405. From Redondo Beach or Hermosa Beach, take PCH east through the harbor area. From Manhattan Beach, the 405 east is your best bet. El Segundo and Hawthorne residents take the 405 south and east. Every South Bay community reaches Aces High in 15 to 25 minutes, and the drive is mostly against commute traffic for early morning lessons.

Friendlier Airspace Than LAXClass D, not under the Bravo core
South Bay residents live directly under LAX's Class Bravo airspace, one of the most complex airspace environments in the world. Training at KLGB instead of trying to operate near LAX means you start at a Class D towered field with manageable traffic, and you learn Bravo procedures gradually as your skills develop. You still get SoCal complexity exposure, but it is structured and progressive rather than overwhelming on day one.

Fleet Depth and Availability13 aircraft, no waitlist for planes
South Bay flight schools at Torrance (TOA) and Hawthorne (HHR) operate small fleets of two to four aircraft. One down for maintenance means your schedule is disrupted. At Aces High, nine Cessna 152s, two 172s, a Diamond DA-42, and a Redbird MCX simulator mean aircraft availability is rarely an issue. South Bay students keep a consistent training cadence, which is the single biggest factor in finishing on time and on budget.

Training Programs

PPL through CFI

How we quote · Every cost estimate below assumes the realistic US national average of ~70 flight hours for the Private Pilot License, not the FAA minimum of 40 hours. Almost no one finishes at the minimum. We quote what students actually fly so the numbers reflect real-world cost.

Private Pilot LicenseFAA Part 61 · the foundation certificate
Flight maneuvers, navigation, radio communication, weather theory, and FAA regulations. Train in a Cessna 152 or 172. South Bay students who maintain a three-to-four-day weekly schedule typically earn their PPL in three to five months. Full-time students aiming for accelerated completion can finish in about three months.

Instrument RatingMade for South Bay marine layer
South Bay weather means foggy mornings from May through July and occasional low ceilings year-round. An instrument rating removes that limitation entirely. We blend Redbird MCX simulator time ($90/hr) with real instrument approaches in four IFR-equipped Cessna 152s and our 172s. South Bay pilots who earn their instrument rating fly year-round instead of canceling half their trips.

Time-building along the coast from the South Bay to Santa Barbara, over to Catalina, and inland to Thermal or Palm Springs. Commercial maneuver polish with a dedicated CFI. Pair with multi-engine training in the Diamond DA-42 to build an airline-ready profile.
