Torrance
Flight School

12 miles east. 15 minutes door-to-ramp.
A bigger fleet, a longer runway, and better scheduling.

Torrance residents already know Zamperini Field (TOA). It is a great little airport, but flight schools there face space constraints and limited availability. Aces High Aviation at Long Beach Airport is a quick 15-minute drive east on PCH or the 405, and gives you access to 13 aircraft, 15+ instructors, and a towered environment that prepares you for flying anywhere. Many of our Torrance students say the slightly longer drive was the best training decision they made.

15 Minutes, No Freeway RequiredPCH east to Lakewood Blvd · or 405 to 710
From central Torrance, take PCH east past Signal Hill and turn right on Lakewood Blvd. The school is directly on the airport. Alternatively, the 405 to the 710 south is a straight shot. Either way, you are walking into the building within 15 minutes of leaving Torrance. Early morning lessons before work are very doable.

Bigger Fleet, More Openings13 aircraft vs typical 3-4 at TOA schools
Zamperini Field schools typically operate three to four trainers. When one goes down for maintenance, your schedule gets disrupted. We run nine Cessna 152s (four IFR-equipped), two Cessna 172s, a Diamond DA-42 Twin Star, and a Redbird MCX simulator. If one aircraft is down, you fly another. Torrance students consistently cite scheduling flexibility as the main reason they chose us over closer options.

Busier Tower, Richer Radio WorkThree runways, airline + cargo traffic
KTOA is towered too, but it is a single-runway field with mostly GA traffic. KLGB has three runways and a daily mix of JetBlue, FedEx, and corporate jets alongside trainers. You learn sequencing behind airliners, intersection departures, and parallel-runway operations from your first lesson. When a DPE sends you to a busy field on the checkride, none of it is new.

How We Quote

Every cost estimate below assumes the realistic US national average of ~70 flight hours for the Private Pilot License, not the FAA minimum of 40 hours. Almost no one finishes at the minimum. We quote what students actually fly so the numbers reflect real-world cost.

Instrument RatingEssential for SoCal marine layer flying
South Bay pilots know the marine layer well. An instrument rating lets you depart on overcast mornings that ground VFR-only pilots. Our Redbird MCX simulator ($90/hr) handles early instrument scan work at a fraction of aircraft cost, and four of our C152s carry full IFR avionics.
